This is a reworking (with a couple of minor tweaks) of the subs file I created for release "Juste.Une.Question.D'amour.2000.858p.DVDRip.AC3.DD5.1.mkv".
Although this particular video rip release incorporates English subtitles, the subtitles built into the mkv file are wildly inaccurate at times.
French, as a language is heavily nuanced (even the word "nuance" is itself a French derived word). Consequently it requires a good translation from someone who will pick up on the nuances to translate the exact meaning of what is said, and not just the words.
This is a very accurate translation which captures the subtle nuances and double-entendres. There is one grey area, which I chewed over (where Cédric equates losing ones' virginity) and I decided in the end to avoid a literal translation and instead chose to convey the double entendre - what was implied, not just spoken.
I made sure to time-align the subtitles very carefully, and wherever possible, when conversation flow allows, avoid doubling-up of conversational lines displaying as a single on-screen subtitle.
(e.g. getting rid of the:
- he said this line
- she replied, that line, type of text display
as I've always found that displaying translated speech in this format can be a bit confusing amd immersion breaking.)
I hope this will make this excellent film enjoyable and approachable for English-speaking viewers.
